Fraud and suspicious activity

Alert message sent 02/05/2018 09:37:00

Information sent on behalf of Durham Constabulary

Over the past week we have received a number of calls relating to suspicious activity in the Forrest-In-Teesdale area and one incident in the Marwood area of Teesdale. We believe that unknown persons have been trying to obtain bank and credit card details of individuals and arranging for those cards to be posted to the home addresses without their knowledge. The suspects then try and intercept the mail as the post boxes are at the end of long driveways in rural areas. We are aware of one individual who has had a credit card applied for in their name and subsequently used to obtain funds.

We would suggest that residents in the area contact their banks to check if any cards have been applied for. People can also do a Credit Search on Experian or Clear Score to see if any credit cards have been taken out in their names.

We would also recommend that in the short term people consider either putting locks on their post boxes or contact the Post Office to make alternative arrangements for the delivery/collection of their mail.

We would ask that all residents in the Forrest-In-Teesdale and Marwood area remain vigilant at this time and report any suspicious persons or vehicles in the area to the Police on 101. We are particularly interested in a White Mercedes E220 AMG Sport registration number MM13TXS with two Asian males occupants.
